Small and medium-sized family businesses make up a sizeable chunk of the South West economy – and Truly Scrumptious Cakery based in Cattedown Road, Plymouth – makes only tailor-made cakes and hot pasties to order. 

56-year-old, Karen Hibberd set up the family business with her husband John over 2 years ago, after working 15 years in the care sector.

Mrs Hibberd, said: “I always enjoyed my hobby of making cakes and buns for friends and family, and decided it was now or never – to make our dream of running our own cakery business.”

“My spare-time love of baking as taken over my life, and I now run a very successful tailor-made bakery shop in Cattedown.”

“We are unique, because customers can only purchase a pasty if they call 1 hour in advance – so we can bake them fresh in the oven.” 

“They are already made, but we only sell fresh hot pasties to order,” said Mrs Hibberd.

“At Truly Scrumptious Cakery, we design and personalise birthday cakes, graduation cakes, and wedding cakes that are also vegan and gluten-free for all occasions all year round.”
