English for Young Learners is a year-round course centred on a functional English syllabus. The afternoon schedule is based on the UK’s heritage and iconic literary characters, with themed activities concentrating on Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes.

Jennifer Harrison, Marketing Co-ordinator, said the programme will include film nights, excursions, quizzes and recreations of famous scenes. “They [students] will have the chance to take a trip on a stream train through the Devonshire countryside as well as learning all about the author [Arthur Conan Doyle] and Sherlock Holmes as a character.”

The Junior Silver and Bronze Cultural Programme, meanwhile, includes 15 hours of classroom English per week, combined with fun activities, sports, culture, shopping and a full-day excursion.

“The themed programmes are designed to fit together with our General English programmes, which cover many aspects of UK life, including the Royal Family, UK heritage and history. Our Bronze and Silver programmes are more traditional in their approach. However, we still feel they offer a new level of interest which is intuitive to our young learners’ needs,” said Harrison.

Neil Pick, Chief Executive of the Tellus Group, said, “With new innovative learning opportunities to capture the imagination of young people aged from 11-to-17, we are now offering a three-week roll-on-roll-off course based on a functional English syllabus.”

He added, “With our functional English classes, we’ll supply the young students with the English they need to accomplish specific tasks, such as: finding their way around; asking and giving information; making and responding to suggestions; and asking for advice.”

Pick said he anticipates growth for the junior segment: “We expect the junior language sector to flourish within the next few years, especially for the younger groups, as more parents recognise the importance for their children to experience the cultural, linguistic programmes we can offer.”

Meridian School of English was established in 1979 and offers a range of programmes for juniors and adults, including general English programmes, exam preparation and teacher training courses.
