CELEBRATING 12 YEARS OF DORCAS MEDIA
12 years ago today, dated 1st June 2013, I founded award-winning Dorcas Media and named it after my Mammy, who was named after the charitable woman of Joppa in the Bible.
This was finally the day after half a century that I finally took action and decided to strike out at running my own enterprise.
It is still nerve-racking, after 12 years running our award-winning PR and marketing agency. And still pride ourselves on being a boutique company.
I have learnt so much on my journey and am in the middle of an Open University marketing course to brush up on my skills, like AI, all the latest social media deliveries, content, marketing, and combination strategies. It is ever-changing, and you need to be part of the curve.
Even a recent health scare that I must confess changes your attitude has given me more ambitions on things I still hope to achieve, said Kevin.
Because starting a business is one of the greatest things you can ever do and a few personal lessons I’ve learnt.
1. Never stop learning.
Keeping an open mind and furthering your own knowledge on different components of your business – it will keep you in front.
2. It’s all about community.
My absolute vocation is always giving something back if you can, and I don’t mean money, with heartfelt community campaigning, loving the city I was born and brought up in.
3. Have a clear vision.
What do you want to be known for?
4. Know your customer.
5. It’s a marathon, not a sprint – don’t give up.
6. Don’t compare yourself to others.
7. Never be afraid to reinvent yourself.
8. Some people won’t like you, and that’s perfectly OK.
9. You have to invest in it.
You need to spend money to make money.
10. Learning more about multiple sources of income through social media.
11. Integrity and reputation in what you do.
12. Learning from my mistakes.
Have the humility to learn from your mistakes and be ok with actually making them.
