A LANGUAGE BURSARY FOSTERING PLYMOUTH/BREST LINKS

17-year-old French student Marion Quemeneur at the La Croix Rouge School in Brest, is celebrating being awarded a £1,000 bursary from the Suzanne Sparrow Language School in Plymouth.

Dr Suzanne Sparrow created the gift to reward French students diligently using the English language during their educational experience in the UK.

Marion Quemeneur was chosen by English teacher Christelle Florin the head teacher of economics at the French school, who said Marion had made the most regular and steady progress in her English language learning and supported other students.

Miss Quemeneur, said: “I was very excited and honoured to be awarded the first bursary from the Suzanne Sparrow School and will spend the money on books and materials, study trips, and accommodation.”

“I have really enjoyed my study in Plymouth, and this is a good link to support humanities and personal relationships between the schools in Plymouth and Brest.”

Philanthropic Dr Sparrow is gifting the awards over the next five years and called the ‘Suzanne and Bernard Sparrow Bursary Awards’ to support 17 or 18 year olds, who have made the most out of their English learning skills.

Dr Sparrow, said: “We are the first language school in the city to create a bursary and helping our foreign language students towards their education.”

“The English language sector is worth over £2.1 billion to the UK every year and our way of putting something back, and fostering the links we have cemented with the La Croix Rouge school since 1980.”

The Suzanne Sparrow School is also sponsoring next years ‘Words & Music Festival’ in Plymouth celebrating musical sounds and the expressive English Language and the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare.

Dr Sparrow recently received the Chairman’s Award for Special Contribution in the city at the first Plymouth and Devon Chamber of Commerce business awards and shortlisted for the Herald’s Lifetime Achievement Awards.
